Mobile Phone Buyer’s Guide
Sure, choosing a mobile phone isn’t a life or death situation, but retail therapy can become more than a pain in the bank account if you choose a new mobile that doesn’t live up to your expectations.
People develop almost a relationship-type bond with a mobile phone. So if after a few months you’re discovering the mobile just isn’t the right fit for you, you may find yourself gazing with inexplicable lust at other mobiles that DO catch your eye for the right reasons - leaving you glaring in frustration at the one left in your hand.
Before you know it, you’ll be wondering how much you can palm yours off for and you’re back to the beginning: searching for a new mobile and one you can truly love this time!
So avoid the buyer’s remorse and follow our complete mobile phone buyer’s guide to choosing the right mobile phone:
Step 1: Make sure your mobile suits your lifestyle
Ask yourself:
- Am I just looking for a mobile phone that rings when someone calls, can make calls when I want it to and if I really want to live life on the edge, can send a text message when need be ...it’s not too much to ask right ...RIGHT!?
- Am I a high-flyer who needs a powerful mobile, complete with all the bells and whistles that’ll help me seal the deal, such as built-in GPS, a big screen for checking my daily schedule, sending and receiving emails and editing documents.
check out the Nokia N97 or the Samsung i900, Nokia E71
- Am I fashionista who wants the latest style mobile, complete with all the bling, ringtones and cute little things that hang off the side to keep it shiny
then you’ll love the LG Prada II, Samsung F480 or the Nokia 2680, Nokia N97
- Am I the tech-head who wants a megapixel monster to capture every moment of my life in high-definition? Do I want the fastest 3G connection and the biggest internal memory?
then definitely checkout the Nokia N97.
Step 2: Decide on the style
- Traditional candy bar– durable and solid.
- Clamshell–flip to answer and end calls, protects screen.
- Slider-fashionable, easy to use
- PDA-Pocket computers so you’re always connected.
Step 3: Mobile User’s ...choose your megapixels!
Choosing a mobile with a camera? Ensure the megapixels are high enough for what you need. Camera phones come in a huge range of megapixels and digital / optical zoom. If you’re serious about photography, look for one of the camera phones with resolutions of two, three or more megapixels.
The Nokia N96 with 5MP.
NOTE: Despite what some stores will tell you, don’t expect your mobile to replace a traditional camera for overall quality and flexible photographic functionality.
Step 4: MP3 Players and Mobiles – not always the “be all and end all”
Don’t be fooled by clever marketing: most mobiles can’t replace a dedicated music player. They can be slower to transfer songs AND more expensive to download them. So unless there’s a standard headphone socket, you’ll be left using the sub-par ones that come with it or invest in purchasing better ones separately. If you do decide to choose your mobile based on its MP3 playing abilities, make sure that there’s at least an adaptor available and it has reasonable memory storage capabilities.
For this we recommend: Nokia 5800, Samsung i900, LG Arena.
Mad Mobile Blunders
AVOID:
- Paying too much for too little. You’ll obviously pay a premium for the latest phones, but prices vary dramatically between stores. The best prices are generally on the net (just like ours). On a budget? Make the most of your money and choose a phone with only the features you’ll actually use.
- Picking a phone with NO staying power. There’s nothing more frustrating than getting stuck with a dead phone 2 hours after you charge it. Get as much battery life as you can. New phones can use a lot of their battery power when used for browsing and taking photos so it’s really important you check manufacturer’s specs.
- It’s a hand’s on experience. Getting a mobile that doesn’t feel right …it’s an ergonomic nightmare! Make sure you check how easily you can navigate, text and call, as well as how it feels against your ear and in your hand. Some of us have skinny fingers, some of us not so skinny, make sure the keys are big enough to use easily, especially where some models use a QUERTY keyboard. Be sure to test the sturdiness as well ...you don’t want a flip phone that breaks when you open it!
- Form or function? Don’t be intoxicated by the heady scent of style and miss out on handy features in the process. Some screens are so small that unless you’re Tom Thumb they’re practically useless, while others are so lightweight that the battery capacity is too small therefore run time is short. You need to decide what matters most to you: form or function?
- Choosing a phone with the wrong service provider can see you end up with no or next to no coverage in your area. Do you research and make sure that the carrier you go with has the best service in your local coverage area remembering this is where you'll be making most of your calls.
