Mobile Phone Buyer's Guide
While choosing a mobile phone isn’t actually a life or death situation, retail therapy can become more than a pain in the bank account if you choose a new mobile that just doesn’t cut the mustard. After a few months with a mobile that’s just not you –whether it’s a camera that can’t quite capture those embarrassing Saturday night drinking escapades or because it’s impossible to text on – you’ll find yourself gazing with inexplicable lust at mobiles that catch your eye for the right reasons… and leave you glazing at the one left in your own hand. Before you know it, you’ll be wondering how much you can palm yours off to your little sister for and you’re back to the beginning: looking for a new mobile phone.

Want to avoid the melodrama? Follow our complete buyer’s guide to choosing the right mobile phone:
Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4
Step 1: Make sure your mobile will suit your lifestyle?
Step 1 I am:

  1. A high-flyer who needs a powerful mobile, complete with all the bells and whistles that will help me “seal the deal”, such as built-in GSP (because I don’t have time to get lost), a big screen for checking my daily schedule, sending and receiving emails, and editing documents. ((check out the Nokia N95 8Gb, Samsung i320, HTC Touch, BlackBerry 8100g Pearl or the Nokia 6110 Navigator).
  2. A fashionista who wants the latest style mobile, complete with all the bling and ringtones and cute little things that hang off the side to keep it shiny (you’ll love the LG KE850 Prada, Samsung U700 Silver, Sony Ericsson W910i Black , Nokia E65 Pink and the BlackBerry 8100g Pearl).
  3. A tech-head who wants a megapixel monster to capture every moment of my life in high-def, the fastest 3G connection and the biggest internal memory. (uncover the Sony Ericsson P1i, Samsung Blackjack, Nokia 6500 Slide, and the Samsung i320 ).
  4. Just looking for a mobile phone, damn it – I just want to make and receive calls and then if I’m feeling adventurous, maybe I’ll try texting. (try the Nokia 2630, Nokia 3110 Classic, Nokia 3500 Grey or when you get the hang of SMS, the Nokia 6300).

Step 2: Decide on the style
Step 2
  1. Traditional candy bar– durable and solid.
  2. Clamshell– flip to answer and end calls, protects screen.
  3. Slider-fashionable, easy to use
  4. PDA - Pocket computers so you’re always connected.
Step 3: Choose your megapixel madness
Step 3 If you choose a mobile with a camera – make sure the megapixels are high enough for what you need. Camera phones come in a huge range of megapixels and digital/optical zoom. If you’re at all serious about photography, look for one of the crop of upcoming camera phones, with far better resolutions of two, three or more megapixels. such as the Nokia N95 8Gb with 5MP, the Samsung U700 Silver with 3.15MP or the Sony Ericsson P1i with 3.2MP.

NOTE: Despite what some slimy salesmen will tell you - do not expect your mobile to replace a traditional stills camera.
Step 4: MP3 Players and Mobiles – not always the “be all and end all”
Step 3 Don’t be fooled by clever marketing: most mobiles cannot replace a dedicated music player. It can be slow to transfer songs and expensive to download them and unless there is a standard headphone socket, you’ll be left using the shady ones that either come with it or you have to purchase separately. If you do decide to choose your mobile based on it’s MP3 playing abilities, make sure that there is at least that there is an adaptor available and it has decent sized storage capabilities.

Mobile phone blunders to avoid like bird flu:

  1. Choosing a phone with the wrong service provider… and ending up with no coverage in your area. Do you research and make sure that the carrier you go with has the best service in your local coverage area, where you'll be making most of your calls.
  2. Picking a phone with no staying power… and getting stuck with a dead phone 2 hours after you charge it. Get as much battery life as you can, especially for slick new phones that use a lot, such as for browsing and taking photos – check manufacturer’s specs.
  3. Getting a mobile that just doesn’t feel right… and is an ergonomic nightmare. Make sure you check how easily you can navigate, text and call, as well as how it feels against your ear and in your hand. Fat fingered? Make sure the keys are big enough to use easily, especially if there is a QUERTY keyboard. Be sure to test the sturdiness as well – you don’t want a flip phone that breaks when you open it!
  4. Being intoxicated by the heady scent of style…and missing out on features in the process. Some screens are so small that they are practically useless, while others are so lightweight that the battery is too small. You need to decide what matters most to you: form or function.
  5. Paying too much… for too little. You’ll obviously pay a premium for the latest phones, but prices vary dramatically between stores. The best prices are generally on the net (just like ours!) On a budget? Choose a phone with only the features that you’ll actually use.
